Howard Lederer grew up in a family of 5 where he enjoyed playing numerous card games at a young age. He found himself getting very competitive in these particular card games while playing his father. While playing chess, he was introduced to a poker game going on in the rear of the room. Howard’s initial two years were rough as he played extensive hours and fail to win a majority of the time. He earned some additional cash by becoming an runner for the poker players. He believed he might better his game by adjusting his life outside of poker. He brought about an effort to acquire more rest and focus attention more on the game.

The definite improvement in his abilities began when he began gambling at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the best players would often compete against one another. He had access into some of the best minds in chess. With their help, Howard would sharpen his cunning thinking abilities. He used these strategy ideas in the game of NL Texas Holdem.

Howard also assisted his sister Annie Duke master the game of poker. Annie Duke was a superb student of poker as she constantly asked questions about the right way to make the correct choice. Howard told Annie Duke to move out to Las Vegas and play in the WSOP competition. Annie Duke is one of the strongest female players the poker arena has ever seen. Howard relocated to Las Vegas in 1993 and competed in cash games for the subsequent 10 years. When the World Poker Tournament gained popularity, he decided to compete in more tournaments.
